UPPER EAST SIDE — A group of straphangers came to the rescue of a man who fell into the tracks of the 77th Street subway station on Friday afternoon, according to witnesses.
A man, who witnesses described as elderly, fell into the northbound tracks of the 6 train about 2:25 p.m. on Friday, according FDNY officials.
He was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in serious but stable condition, the FDNY said.
Several people came to his rescue to lift him up onto the platform before the train rolled into the station, according to witnesses.
"He was an elderly gentleman and looked like he could have had heat exhaustion," said East Harlem resident John Peppers, who was sitting at a bench nearby when he saw the man topple in.
"I saw him keel over. They got him out and laid him on the platform."
A woman who arrived at the station after the victim was already taken away added, "There was blood on the platform."
The MTA said it is unknown why the man fell and that the incident is under investigation.
