HELL’S KITCHEN — The owner of the Jacob K. Javits Center has selected three finalists to compete for the convention center’s planned $1 billion expansion.

Gilbane Building Company, a Skanska USA joint venture and a joint venture between Lend Lease Group and Turner Construction Company will each submit proposals for the project by the end of October, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a release.

The three design-build teams will also submit reports estimating how much their proposed projects will cost, the release added.

“The Javits Center is one of New York’s greatest economic assets, and this project will help to ensure it remains a source of jobs and economic activity for years to come,” Cuomo said in a statement.

“This is an important milestone in our plan to transform Javits into a 21st century venue for the next generation, and I look forward to seeing this project get off the ground,” he added.

The governor unveiled plans for the expansion — which will increase the center’s square footage from 2.1 million square feet to 3.3 million square feet — in January.

A new truck facility, a 60,000-square-foot ballroom and a green roof terrace are among the features included in the expansion.

In April, the center's owner put out a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking teams to carry out the project.

Preliminary construction work at the center is expected to begin this fall, the release said.

Teams were selected based on factors including past experience with large-scale projects, “financial capability” and familiarity with the design-build construction method.

A winner will be selected early next year, the release said.
