SUNNYSIDE — A group of local residents opened a bar and restaurant in the neighborhood Monday night that serves up New American fare, cocktails and local craft beer, according to the owners.

The Lowery Bar and Kitchen debuted after months of renovations at the corner of 43rd Street and 43rd Avenue, in the space formerly occupied by Sofra Cafe. Owner Anne Muldoon said they want to bring another option to the neighborhood's already ample dining scene.

"Myself and two of my business partners have lived in Sunnyside for a long time. We wanted to bring another addition to the neighborhood," she said. "There's some great places."

The Lowery's menu will initially launch with a small, 13-item menu that will grow in the coming weeks, Muldoon said.

Their signature dish is their flat breads, which come topped with savory ingredients — like The Lowery flat bread served with pulled pork, caramelized pineapple and pickled banana peppers.

Other dishes include a burger made with short rib and brisket, or a vegetarian burger made with sweet potato and black beans. They also plan to add brunch service soon.

"As we continue on, we'll keep adding to our menu," Muldoon said.

The bar serves up wine and New York-area craft beer, including brews from Finback Brewery in Glendale and Long Island's Montauk Brewing Company. The drinks menu also includes cocktails, including a drink made with bourbon and Campari that's available on tap.

The owners have done significant renovations to the restaurant space in the last several months, including adding a brightly colored mural along the exterior facade that was designed by a 12-year-old student from nearby P.S. 150.

The drawing features the buildings and streets of Sunnyside, including the well-known Sunnyside arch on 46th Street and Queens Boulevard.

"We needed something bright on the side of the building," Muldoon said. "I wanted it to be bright and colorful and say something [about Sunnyside]."
