Man Caught Stealing Bikes Out of Audi SUV in the West Village, Police Say

WEST VILLAGE — A 48-year-old man stole two $3,000 bicycles out of a car in the middle of the night in the West Village, police said.

The man was spotted breaking the back window of a parked Audi SUV at Washington and Greenwich streets about 2:45 a.m. on June 10, police said.

The witness saw the man reach into the car and pull out two bicycles, and then walk away with the bicycles, police said.

A pair of police officers stopped the man and retrieved the two bicycles, then patted the man down and found a screwdriver and a multi-tool in his sweatshirt pocket, according to court documents. A third officer found a hammer and pliers in the man's backpack, police said.

Police said those tools are all commonly used to break into cars.

The owner of the car told police the repairs to his car will cost more than $250, according to court documents, and that the bicycles were worth more than $3,000.

The man was previously convicted of auto-stripping in the third degree in the past five years, police said.

He was charged with grand larceny in the third degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, autostripping in the second degree and possession of burglar's tools.

His attorney did not respond to a request for comment. He's due back in court on July 12 and is currently being held on bail of $20,000 bond or $5,000 cash.
