LOWER MANHATTAN — Brookfield Place is going to the birds.

A new installation that features 175 moving fabric birds will be flying high inside Brookfield Place's Winter Garden starting June 27.

Along with the blue, inflated cotton birds, the exhibit, called "Air Pressure," is a means to play with air as another key element in the floating sculpture, designers Studio F Minus said in a project statement.

A sense of flight is created as the birds' wings move up and down independently from each other, responding to internal fans that power on and off with electric timers.

"This installation investigates the material on numerous levels: it gives form to air, suspends that form in air, and also uses that material as a force to animate the sculpture," Brookfield Place said in a statement. "The artwork makes viewers aware of not just the form of the sculptures, but the negative space around them: the invisible matter everywhere."

"Air Pressure" will be on view from June 27 to Sept. 12 inside the Winter Garden atrium at 230 Vesey St.
