ASTORIA — Relive your childhood at the Museum of the Moving Image this summer, when dozens of arcade games from the 70s, 80s and early 90s will be on display and available to play for a quarter each.
While the museum always has about a dozen games available for visitors to play, this temporary exhibit will more than triple that number and feature games that aren't usually available, including Track and Field, Star Wars and Karate Champ.
Beloved favorites like Frogger, Pong, Q*Bert, Space Invaders, NBA Jam, Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Mortal Kombat are also among the 38 games showcased in the museum's latest "Arcade Classics" exhibit, which will be on view through Oct. 23.
The games are pulled from the museum's longtime collection, with the earliest from 1971 and the newest from 1993 — hearkening back to a time when "the American public flocked to bars, malls, and recreation centers to play video arcade games, sparking a cultural phenomenon," according to a press release about the exhibit.
Many of the games have been newly restored, according to the museum.
"This is an opportunity for the public to experience these classic games in their original form, for a limited time," Carl Goodman, the museum's director, said in a statement.
The museum's $15 admission fee will come with four game tokens, and extras can be purchased at the price of four for $1, organizers said.
The exhibit will feature information about the history of arcade games and how they influenced today's video games. The museum will also host video game-related activities for kids 6 and up on Saturdays from 12 to 5 p.m. until the end of July.
