NEW YORK CITY — Six of the world's 14 best new lighting designs are in New York City, according to the experts.

An Upper West Side synagogue and a Union Square theater were among six New York City lighting installations honored at the 2016 Lumen Awards Gala at Chelsea Piers on Thursday.

The Lumen Awards program is run by the New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, an organization of lighting designers, architects, engineers, and manufacturers who have been celebrating lighting design since 1968.

Fourteen buildings in Los Angeles, New York City, Nashville, Washington, D.C, St. Louis, New Canaan, Conn., Corning, N.Y., and Seoul, South Korea received Lumen Awards.

In New York City, a theater, a synagogue, a cafeteria, an art exhibit, a television studio and a hotel were honored.

► Lincoln Square Synagogue lighting designer Tillotson Design Associates won an award of excellence. 180 Amsterdam Ave. is in Manhattan.

► The cafeteria at 85 Broad St. lighting designer One Lux Studio won an award of merit.

► The Sherry-Netherland Hotel lighting designer Orsman Design won a citation award. The building is located at 781 Fifth Ave. in Manhattan.

► NBCUniversal Lobby and Mezzanine lighting designer Cooley Monato Studio won a citation award. 30 Rockefeller Plaza is in Manhattan.

► The Daryl Roth Theater lighting designer Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design won a citation award. The theater is at 101 E. 15 St. in Manhattan.

► Smack Mellon gallery exhibit ROIL lighting designer Christine Sciulli won a citation award for her work at 92 Plymouth St. in Brooklyn.

The Lumen Awards celebrated lighting exhibiting both original design and innovative technology, said Lumen Committee chair Megan Carroll in a statement.

“Just a decade ago, the technologies that enable and empower this year’s lighting applications were purely theoretical,” said Carroll.

“There has never been a more disruptive or demanding time since the advent of electric lighting.”
