Rubber Mallet-Wielding Woman Attacks Straphanger at 96th St. Station: NYPD

By Shaye Weaver | June 16, 2016 12:40pm

UPPER EAST SIDE — A straphanger was attacked by a woman with a rubber mallet as she was getting on the 6 train Tuesday night, according to the NYPD.

The 21-year-old victim was at a kiosk at the 96th Street subway station buying a MetroCard at 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday when a woman came up to her and made a remark, according to authorities.

The victim told police she didn't know what was said, but she ignored her and headed toward the southbound platform of the 6 train, according to officials.

As she was heading toward the train, the woman followed her, spat on her and then took a rubber mallet out of her purse and struck the victim in the head, according to the NYPD.

The victim didn't realize she was bleeding from the blow until she was on the train headed south to the 51st Street station.

After contacting police, she was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital Center.

Police describe the suspect as a woman in her 20s standing 5-feet-8 and weighing 135 pounds.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
