PARK SLOPE — A young boy carrying a backpack was knocked to the ground by a car Thursday morning, authorities and a witness said.

The boy, whose name and age weren't immediately released, was crossing the street near Fifth Avenue and Garfield Place about 8 a.m. when the car hit him, according to an FDNY spokesman and the witness.

"When I saw him, my heart dropped. He was sitting up, crying, 'Ow, ow, ow,'" said Abraham Ahary, 28, who saw the aftermath from a nearby deli.

The boy, who had scrapes to his back and knee, was treated at Methodist Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition, FDNY officials said.

NYPD officials did not immediately have further information about the driver.

Nannies passing by the intersection later Thursday morning said the kids they care for are terrified by reckless drivers.

Sidney Morss, 22, cares for a 7-year-old boy who said the incident "totally scares him."

"We've had to have a lot of long talks about street safety," Morss said.

Another nanny, Gail Williams, said she and the 2-year-old girl she cares for were nearly hit nearby.

"Just the other day we were crossing the street as someone was making a turn. We had the light but we had to jump of her way," said Williams, 49.

"The streets are always busy and the drivers don't care."
