QUEENS — Just in time for the 2016 concert season, the Forest Hills Stadium has undergone several improvements — including new bathrooms and a wider entrance — making it better suited to visitors' needs, organizers said

The 64 portable bathrooms were custom-designed and feature air conditioning and lights that indicate whether units are occupied, as well as sinks with running water.

“They are basically almost like little airplane toilets,” said Jon McMillan, an event producer, noting that the new system cost "a couple hundred thousand dollars."

In previous seasons, concertgoers had to rely solely on traditional Porta-Johns, which, if needed, may still be used this year, in addition to the new commodes.

Organizers are considering installing permanent bathrooms at the stadium at some point, but, in the meantime, the new outside units will "make the quality of the fan experience much better," McMillan said.

“Anybody who walks in there is going to be like: 'Oh, it's the same — like going to the bathroom at Madison Square Garden,'” he added.

Other improvements at the venue include changes to the entrance on Burns Street. The gate that used to be 28-feet wide is now twice as large. Organizers are also working on expanding the pathway between the gate and the stadium to improve the flow as concertgoers enter and leave, they said.

The team behind the concerts plans to meet Tuesday with residents to address neighbor concerns.

In previous years, some locals complained about noise during the concerts, and in 2014 the organizers received a violation for playing music too loud. Concert organizers have since worked with the city's Department of Environmental Protection to reduce the noise level and invested more than $500,000 in a new sound-reduction system.

The entire venue, which formerly hosted the U.S. Open until it moved to Flushing Meadows Corona Park in 1978, has also undergone a multimillion dollar overhaul in recent years.

This year's lineup will include music legends like Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, who are returning to the stadium decades after they performed there in the 1960s and 1970s. Country music stars Dolly Parton and Chris Stapleton will also play in Forest Hills this season.

Mumford and Sons, the first band to play at the stadium in 2013, decades after music events had stopped there in the late 1980s, will kick off the 2016 season with two concerts — on June 16 and 17.

This year's season will end on Oct. 9, when Van Morrison, who performed at the stadium last year, returns to the venue to play with his daughter Shana Morrison.
