BUSHWICK — The balcony of a Bushwick mansion collapsed under the weight of about 50 partygoers Sunday, sending them crashing to the ground, according to fire officials and reports.
Just before 12:30 a.m., fire officials responded to calls for help and found the second floor deck at 670 Bushwick Ave. had crashed to the ground, they said.
There had been a party taking place at the time of the collapse, according to reports.
Emergency workers treated 16 people for mostly minor injuries, officials said.
Three victims had more serious injuries, though not life threatening ones. Three people refused medical attention at scene, while the rest were taken to area hospitals, according to the FDNY.
The historic building known as the Cook Mansion, or officially as the Catherina Lipsius House or the Frederick A. Cook House, was built in the late 1800s and designated a city landmark in 2013, records show.
The mansion was built for the Lipsius family, owners of the Claus Lipsius Brewing Company, one of the many prosperous German brewing families that lived in Bushwick near the turn of the century.
The building is listed on Corcoran's real estate website where a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony rents for $2,500 a month.
The building had no prior violations, according to Department of Building records. Following the deck collapse, the department slapped its owners with a violation for failing to keep the deck safe, spokesman Andrew Rudansky said.
The building's owner Jean Baptiste Bruno, who purchased the building in 2000, declined to comment Monday.
