Candidates for Rangel's Seat Debate Before June Primary

BRONX - Candidates vying to replace U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel faced off Thursday evening to discuss how they would address issues facing the district's African constituents.

Dozens gathered to hear from the contenders - stay-at-home father Michael Gallagher,State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Suzan Johnson Cook, former State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, former senior aide to President Bill Clinton Clyde Williams, Manhattan Assemblymen Guillermo Linares and Keith Wright - at the 13th Congressional District African Town Hall.

According to the U.S. Census, New York State has one of the largest African-born immigrant populations in the country.

The candidates discussed issues such as immigration, health care and language access, jobs, affordable housing, gender violence, small business and political representation in public office.

This was the third time candidates competing to represent the district, which covers Harlem, Inwood, Marble Hill, Washington Heights, Morningside Heights, parts of the Upper West Side and the western Bronx, have debated policy positions before the June 28 primary.

Rangel, who is serving his 23rd term in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced his retirement last year.

DNAinfo New York lived-tweeted the forum. The event was held at the Bronx Museum at 1040 Grand Concourse and was sponsored by a number of local organizations, including the African Leadership Project, the organization African Communities Together, BAJI (Black Alliance for Just Immigration), African Services Committee and the Center for African Women and Families.
