FORT WADSWORTH — An NYPD officer on his way to work Thursday night rescued a man trying to leap off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, police said.
Officer Craig Sikorski, who works in Manhattan's 6th Precinct, was driving to work on the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge at about 9:10 p.m. when he saw a Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority car following a slow moving Chevy Cruz, the NYPD said.
The 27-year-old male driver of the Chevy jumped out of the car wearing a book bag with a 50-pound weight inside and put one leg over the wall, police said.
Sikorski and the TBTA officer started to talk to the man and, while the man's attention was on the other officer, Sikorski grabbed him and pulled him away from the bridge's edge, police said.
EMS arrived at the scene and took the man to Lutheran Hospital for evaluation, police said.
