ASTORIA — The neighborhood is getting a new farmers market.
Nonprofit GrowNYC will open a new youth-run market in Ditmars Park this summer, which is slated to open in July and run every Saturday through November, the organization said.
The market, located on Steinway Street between Ditmars Boulevard and 23rd Avenue, will be staffed by high school students and will feature produce from more than two dozen farms, most of them based in New York state.
It's expected to sell fruits and vegetables, eggs, honey, maple syrup and other goods, according to GrowNYC. Additional vendors may be added later depending on demand.
Student workers will staff the "Youthmarket" and spend the summer learning about farming and small business practices. They'll also get to host cooking demonstrations and nutrition workshops, according to organizers.
A community partner organization will be in charge of hiring the young staffers, according to GrowNYC.
The Ditmars Park market will operate on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 9 to Nov. 19. Neighborhood blog We Heart Astoria first reported on its opening.
It will be the third market that GrowNYC runs in Astoria, with others located in Socrates Sculpture Park and on 14th Street and 31st Avenue.
