RED HOOK — Brooklyn CrossFit has expanded to a new location in Red Hook after outgrowing its former gym in the Columbia Street Waterfront District.

The new gym opened this past weekend at 209 Van Brunt St. between Seabring and Commerce streets, and is the only CrossFit gym in the neighborhood.

In 2013, Brooklyn CrossFit opened a nearby location on Summit Street, but closed that gym in favor of the larger Red Hook space that's roughly 2,500 square feet.

"We just needed more space for our members," said co-founder Carlos Vizcarra.

CrossFit is a high-intensity strength training and conditioning program that has thousands of affiliates across the world.

The gym is looking to expand its fitness community with new members, and plans to launch Olympic weightlifting training sessions and women-only classes.

Brooklyn CrossFit now has a gyms in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Red Hook, which Vizcarra called "hot spots in Brooklyn."

"We had specifically targeted Red Hook because of the expansion that's going on there," he said.

That expansion includes the neighborhood's new bars, coffee shops, residential developments and the brand new Tesla showroom, Vizcarra said.

"We're just looking to be part of the revitalization of Red Hook."
