6 New Crosstown Bike Routes Under Consideration for the UES

UPPER EAST SIDE — The city is finally considering alternative crosstown bike lane routes after two months of pushback from residents about its original plan.

The first set of bike routes proposed by the Department of Transportation in February and again in March are still on the table, but alternative routes — including East 70th and 71st streets, East 75th and 76th streets, and East 81st and 82nd streets — will be included in a public hearing at Community Board 8's transportation committee meeting on May 4.

The original proposal, first unveiled during the committee's February meeting, showed painted bike lanes on East 67th, 68th, 77th, 78th, 84th and 85th streets, which many residents rejected citing heavy crowding along those stretches.
