LONGWOOD — A man was fatally stabbed outside a Longwood apartment building Wednesday night, police said.

The 41-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was stabbed twice in the torso outside 906 Simpson St., near Fox Street, at about 10 p.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Neighbors spotted the man face down on the dark street surrounded by blood and pieces of cloth, they said.

"All I saw was him laying there. I thought someone should call 911," said Lulu Pagan, 28, who lives nearby.

He was found face down on the street and pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center, police said.

By Thursday morning a mourner had placed a single white candle where the man was killed.

There were no immediate arrests, police said.

The circumstances of his death weren't immediately clear.

Neighbors were saddened by the killing, but weren't shocked.

"I don't be outside after dark. I'd rather stay in my house with my kids. They need me," Pagan said.

A man who lived in the building the man was killed outside said "this is not the best neighborhood."

There have been 89 felony assaults in the precinct covering the murder scene since Jan. 1, according to police. That's about 30 percent more than the 68 that had happened during the same period in 2015, data shows.

In the past four months there has also been three shootings, six rapes and 72 robberies, statistics show.

"I don't think Arnold Schwarzenegger himself would be brave enough to walk around here empty-handed," the neighbor said.

"I'm sorry to hear that he died, but in this area, you get used to it," he added.
