INTERACTIVE: These Are the Most Popular Spots on 1, 2 and 3 Trains

UPPER WEST SIDE — There's a reason getting on and off the 1, 2, and 3 trains can be a struggle in the morning: Riders love to stand by the doors.

More than 70 percent of straphangers riding the 1, 2 or 3 train in the morning prefer to sit or stand by the train doors for a trip of 15 minutes or less, if all of the seats on the train are available, according to DNAinfo's interactive survey of passengers across the city that attracted more than 7,000 responses.

Of respondents who said they ride the 1, 2 and 3 trains — which start in The Bronx and Harlem and run through Manhattan and into Brooklyn — they were much less willing to stand during the evening rush hour than in the morning.

Straphangers also picked seats near the door for short rides of 15 minutes or less during the morning rush (7 a.m. to 10 a.m.), but that drops significantly for passengers who have to ride for 45 minutes or longer.

And during both the morning and evening rush hours (from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.), more than 50 percent of riders on all three trains said they'd stand by the doors no matter the length of the trip, if all of the seats were taken.

Here's the breakdown of other interesting riding habits:

From 7 to 10 a.m.:

► 22 percent of 2 train riders were willing to stand during a 15-to-45-minute, ride even if their favorite seat was available.

► 11 percent of 3 train riders were willing to stand during a 15-to-45-minute ride, even if their favorite seat was available.

2 Train Standing

Standing isn't a popular first choice on the 2 train, while seats by the doors are in demand.

However, from 4 to 7 p.m.:

► Only 7 percent of 2 train riders were willing to stand during a 15-to-45-minute ride, even if their favorite seat was available.

If all of the seats on the train are taken, 1, 2, and 3 train riders will again congregate by the doors.

1 Train Standing

When all seats are full, 1 train riders prefer to stand near the doors.

While the state has said it will "dramatically improve" the subway system with technological advancements, we traced ways the system is far behind other cities' — from Air Train-like screen doors and better signage to "tap and go" payment systems.

If you want to weigh in with your subway riding preferences for these lines or any lines, take our survey.
