Jackson Heights Man Indicted for Killing Girlfriend's Dog, DA Says

QUEENS — A Jackson Heights man has been indicted after slamming his girlfriend's Chihuahua into the ground, killing it, the Queens DA said.

A grand jury indicted Carlos Hernandez, 33, on charges including aggravated cruelty to animals, robbery and endangering the welfare of a child after attacking the dog during a fight with his girlfriend inside their Forest Hills apartment in January, prosecutors said.

The fight began at 6:15 a.m. on January 10, 2016 when Hernandez grabbed the dog out of his girlfriend's hands and slammed it to the ground, prosecutors said. The dog then began to bleed from the ears and died on the floor a few minutes later, according to a press release issued by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

The girlfriend's 11-year-old daughter, who also took care of the dog, was in the apartment at the time.

"Such acts of aggression toward animals cannot – and will not – be tolerated,” Brown said.

Hernandez faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
