NEW YORK CITY — With views of Astoria and the developing Long Island City skyline, Broadway line riders have some of the best seats in the house. But which seats do riders actually prefer?
In March, we asked DNAinfo New York readers to share their favorite spots on the subway, be they seats by the door or standing spots in the corner. Here's what we learned.
Of the nearly 7,000 DNAinfo readers who have participated in the interactive, about 59 percent said they rode during the morning rush hour, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Most readers said their ride was of moderate length, as 63 percent said their commutes were between 15 and 45 minutes.
Like several other train lines across the city, the N, R and Q lines use a mix of older, perpendicular sear cars and modern parallel seat cars. For our interactive, we represented the N and R lines with the older cars while giving the Q train the modern look.
Just like in our preliminary results, Broadway line riders have a clear preference for seats by the door, as the most popular seats on all three lines are located near the exits. In fact, more than 60 percent of readers chose to sit or stand next to the doors on the N and Q trains.
Get ready to fight to get through the doors on the N or Q trains.
Seating and standing preferences are a bit more spread out on the R train. Only 49.9 percent of riders chose to stand right next to the doors, and while the most popular seat by the door, readers also showed a preference for perpendicular corner seats.
While it's not the most popular seat, R train riders showed a preference toward the much-maligned corner seats.
