NEW YORK CITY — Citi Bike will offer free rides Friday in honor of Earth Day.

The offer coincides with Car-Free NYC initiative, proposed by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez in March, which is meant to encourage New Yorkers to ditch their cars for environmentally-friendly commuting options.

New Yorkers can claim their free Citi Bike rides online by providing their name and email address. Riders will then be emailed a code that can be redeemed at any Citi Bike location across the city.

Citi Bike staff will be available to help answer questions at docking stations along Broadway at 17th, 22nd and 24th streets, according to the company’s statement.

“Whether you’ve never been on a Citi Bike or you ride every day, Earth Day is a perfect time to strap on a helmet, get on a blue bike and gear up for the spring season,” said Jay Walder, president and CEO of Motivate, which operates Citi Bike.

Rodriguez said there will be more Car-Free NYC activities, like outdoor gyms, fitness classes and food demonstrations in Washington Heights and the Flatiron District on Friday.
