Man Gunned Down Outside West Brighton Houses, NYPD Says

STATEN ISLAND — A man was gunned down outside the West Brighton houses Thursday morning, police said.

Shamel Matthews, 21, was outside 780 Hendrson Ave., near Broadway, about 2:34 a.m., when Shaun Plair, 25, shot him in the right side of his chest, NYPD officials said.

Matthews, who lives in the housing complex, was pronounced dead at Richmond University Medical Center, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the shooting.

Plair, who also lives in the complex, went to the same hospital later Thursday only to be recognized and arrested, police said.

He faced charges of murder, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm, police said.

He's been arrested several times as far back as 1997, when he was 7, on charges including tampering with evidence, bringing contraband into prison, reckless endangerment and filing false reports, police said.
