BROOKLYN — Greenpoint's new library branch is on track to being very green indeed.
The new branch coming to 107 Norman Ave. will have three levels of outdoor gardens and an environmentally-sound design with renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines, rainwater harvesting systems and an energy efficient heating and cooling system, according to the Brooklyn Public Library.
"The building itself will be a demonstration of sustainable design and a learning tool for the community," said Karen Fairbanks, a lead architect on the library's design.
The new construction will double the size of the current bunker-like structure to accommodate an environmental education center, areas for kids, teens and community meetings, Fairbanks said.
The project is estimated to cost $11 million and comes partly from funds designated by Greenpoint Environmental Community Fund, that over sees the millions paid to the neighborhood in a 2011 state settlement with ExxonMobil.
The Brooklyn Public Library is forking over $6 million to finish the construction, said the projects manager Ames O'Neill. They'll have to shut down the branch entirely for 18 months during construction, though its not yet clear when that will begin.
During the library's closure, Greenpoint librarians will set up pop up libraries throughout the community and the nearby Leonard Library may have extended hours of operation, O'Neill said.
