CHELSEA — A man was critically hurt when he was hit by a 1 train in the 23rd Street station at Seventh Avenue Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was on the tracks about 12:40 p.m. when he was hit by the southbound train, according to NYPD and MTA officials said.
"There was a lot of commotion. They brought a guy up on a stretcher," said Christopher Swingle, 59, who hands out copies of The Watchtower just outside the station.
"He was just lying there completely still. They took him into an ambulance across the street," Swingle added.
He was treated at Bellevue Hospital, an FDNY spokesman said.
Police are investigating how the man got onto the tracks, but the MTA believes he may have jumped in front of the train, officials said.
Officers pulled two shoes from the tracks afterwards and examined them on the platform before putting them in an evidence bag.
Some train riders were evacuated off a 1 train after the incident.

Southbound 1 trains were briefly disrupted, but returned to normal service by 1:30 p.m., the MTA said.
