WOODSIDE — A man who was beaten with a metal rod during a weekend fight with two attackers on Roosevelt Avenue died Wednesday from his injuries, according to the NYPD.

Martin Quiej, 34, died at Elmhurst General Hospital four days after he was found lying in the street with a head injury early Saturday morning on Roosevelt Avenue and 54th Street, just steps from his home, police said.

Victor Mendoza, 21, was arrested Sunday not far from where the beating occurred, based on a witness's description of the suspects, police said.

The second suspect — described as a man wearing jeans, black shoes and a gray jacket — fled and is still at large, according to police.

Quiej had been hospitalized since the attack, in which he was hit in the head multiple times with a metal rod, according to a criminal complaint.

He suffered severe damage to his skull, bleeding in his brain and had no brain stem function prior to his death, the complaint said.

Mendoza was initially charged with first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the complaint. Upgraded charges are pending in light of Quiej's death, the Queens District Attorney's Office said.

Information on Mendoza's defense attorney was not immediately available Wednesday.
