CHELSEA — Freds at Barneys New York will open for lunch at the luxury department store's new flagship store on Seventh Avenue Monday, the retailer said.
The restaurant on the ninth floor of the Madison Avenue Barneys — favored by New Yorkers like Nora Ephron and the “ladies who lunch” of yore — is known for “classic” dishes like Estelle’s Chicken Soup and Freds Chopped Chicken Salad.
Those same items will be on the Chelsea location’s menu, along with new dishes like a “Chelsea Pizza” with mozzarella, roasted peppers and Hudson Valley Harvest Sausage, avocado toast, and ceviche served with corn chips, Barneys said.
“For us, this restaurant is all about serving downtown neighborhoods,” executive chef Mark Strausman said in a statement. “We’re excited to have a presence in this new project and creating that same familial experience that we have at the Madison restaurant.”
Along with La Colombe coffee, the Seventh Avenue Freds will serve “seasonally hand-crafted cocktails” including a cucumber vodka concoction called “The Chelsea” and a beet-infused vodka mixed with ginger beer, mint, lime and agave called “The Highline.”
The restaurant’s focal point will a 36-foot-wide “site specific” mural painted by a Los-Angeles-based artist, the store added.
During the month of March, the Chelsea outpost will only be serving lunch, with hours of operation Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., a spokeswoman said.
In April, the restaurant will expand its hours and introduce dinner and brunch menus, she added.
Barneys announced it would return to its original Chelsea location back in 2013 and officially opened its doors on Feb. 15.
