BROOKLYN — A man who sexually assaulted a woman on the L train during rush hour Wednesday smiled at the victim as she snapped photos of him for evidence, police said.

The man boarded the train at the Union Square station and as the train headed toward Brooklyn around 6:30 p.m., he lifted the woman's jacket while rubbing his groin against her buttocks, an NYPD spokesman said.

The 28-year-old woman used her elbow to get away from the assailant and moved from the center of the car to the doorway, where she began taking photos, police said.

"It seems like he's looking in the direction of the camera," an NYPD spokesman said of the suspect.

The man, described as 25 years old and 5-feet-11-inches tall, got off at the Jefferson Avenue station. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, tan work boots and a black coat.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
