UPTOWN — The former chairman of an Uptown community board is running for State Assembly.

George Fernandez, who was head of CB12 and most recently served as its treasurer, stepped down Tuesday to concentrate on his election bid to represent the 72nd District.

"Our community needs people who are willing to make a long term commitment," Fernandez said in a statement.

"I will fight for you and I will work with integrity, openness, commitment and compassion."

The seat Fernandez is running for is currently occupied by Guillermo Linares, who is running for Congress along with the current State Sen. Adriano Espaillat. Linares has not yet announced if he will concurrently be running to keep his assembly seat.
