QUEENS — A tree downed by strong winds blocked Union Turnpike in Forest Hills Wednesday night, witnesses said.

Cars struck some of the tree's branches as they slowed to avoid the tree, but did not sustain damage and no one seemed to be injured, according to witnesses.

Carlos Pesantes, who lives nearby said the tree came down near Metropolitan Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. along with a light pole.

At least four cars hit the obstacles before emergency response crews partially closed the road, Pesantes said.

Department of Transportation crews removed the tree and debris out of the roadway Thursday morning, city officials said.
