CHELSEA — A would-be taxi passenger ran off with a cabbie's pricey car keys after the driver wouldn’t let him into the cab with his four friends, police said.

The 64-year-old yellow taxi driver told police that three women and two men got into his vehicle in front of 234 W. 21st St. around 7:48 p.m. on Feb. 20 and requested a ride.

After the driver told them he couldn’t legally take five passengers, the man sitting in the front passenger seat took the $200 car key out of the ignition, got out of the cab and ran away, police said.

The man ran westbound on West 21st Street and then southbound on 12th Avenue, according to police.

Police didn’t say whether or not the man’s friends ran off as well.

Officers conducted a canvas of the area but couldn't find the thief, police said.
