TIMES SQUARE — A police station in the heart of Times Square is getting a $3.5 million revamp that will include an NYPD-related exhibit space, the New York Times reported.

The NYPD has yet to decide on plans for redesigning the police substation on West 43rd Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, but officials hope the revamp will help the station match the more modern look of surrounding buildings.

“The facility itself could be far more useful to us if it reflected the newer dynamic in Times Square,” deputy police commissioner for management and budget, Vincent Grippo, told the Times.

The new station will aim to foster better relations between the police department and the public, he told the paper.

As part of the revamp, lockers and a holding cell currently located inside the station will be replaced by an NYPD-related exhibit space and information kiosks that will be open to the public.

“There’s a lot we want to do with that public space,” NYPD director of capital projects Philip Heller told the Times, adding that the department’s exact plans were still up in the air.

The new station will also take into account potential terrorism threats in the Times Square area, and will include a “state-of-the-art” security system, the Times reported.
