Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Stoned Driver on Staten Island, Police Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | February 17, 2016 6:13pm

LIGHTHOUSE HILL — A man riding his bicycle on Richmond Road in Staten Island Tuesday night was killed after he was hit by a driver who was high on marijuana, police and prosecutors said.

Stanley Marshall, 59, of Great Kills, was riding his bike westbound on Richmond Road at about 5:17 p.m. when Lisa Martini, 52, who was driving a 2013 Honda CR-V, made a left turn at the intersection of Andrews Avenue and Richmond Road and hit Marshall, police said.

Marshall was taken to Staten Island University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

After she was stopped by police, Martini, 52, of Oakwood, had body tremors and bloodshot eyes and told police she smoked pot about three hours before the crash, prosecutors said.

"I don't know what happened," she told police, according to court documents. "I was just pulling out from getting my food and I guess I hit something. I smoked a little bit of weed around 2:30."

Martini was arrested and charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs at her Wednesday arraignment, the Staten Island District Attorney's office said.

Her bail was set at $10,000 and she's due back in court on March 5.

Martini's lawyer, Joseph Sorrentino, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
