COLLEGE POINT — Young gamers could win a chance at a championship prize and a hefty cash sum by dominating the 3-D world of Minecraft in a month-long tournament at a local movie theater.
Super League Gaming — the world's first and largest video game league — is bringing their Minecraft tournament to the College Point Multiplex Cinemas starting Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10:30 a.m.
The league brings all kinds of gamers together to hang out in person, competing on the big screen instead of their little ones at home.
The theater at College Point, on Ulmer Street, will be equipped with Super League's "proprietary game server" and players will compete on custom-designed Minecraft maps for 90 minutes, the organizers said.
Winning teams — who have defeated the rest with creativity and critical thinking — will get a trophy and a $15,000 team scholarship.
Jordan Maron, aka Captain Sparklez, one of the game's biggest YouTube celebrities, said the league "is some of the most fun a kid will ever have playing Minecraft."
Minecraft debuted in 2011 and has been lauded with video game awards for its creativity and innovation.
Players can buy tickets to participate in the tournament, which is $60 and includes a jersey, at the league's website.
