WILLIAMSBURG — A vandal toppled over a guardian angel statue outside of a Roman Catholic Church, sending it shattering to the ground, according to police and workers at the church.

The desecration happened about 4 a.m. on Feb. 3 at Our Lady of Consolation located at 184 Metropolitan Ave. according to a secretary who saw the security video of the vandalism, but declined to describe what happened.

This wasn't the first time that vandals had attacked the church's statues, Father Andrzej Wasko an assistant vicar at the church, which serves mostly Polish congregates, said.

They installed a security camera directly facing the four statues in front of their church to dissuade future attackers, though after the most recent incident, they may consider new security measures, Wasko said.

The guardian angel statue was destroyed on Feb. 3, police said.

Both Wasko and the church's secretary deferred all further comment to Pastor Włodzimierz Łas, who was out of town and couldn't be reached for comment.

Police are asking for help identifying the suspect, who was caught in surveillance camera footage at the time of the crime. He has a beard and long dark hair.
