MIDTOWN — It was the worst of times, it was the best of times.

The city was bracing for another day of bone-chilling temperatures Monday as the morning high reached just 18 degrees — but Tuesday temps are expected to top 50 as a warm air mass finally moves into the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow flurries were expected Monday beginning after 9 a.m. and lingering into the early afternoon. The boroughs could see up to an inch before the precipitation changes to rain in the evening, meteorologists said.

But Tuesday temperatures are expected to reach 56 degrees, 15 degrees warmer than the Feb. 16 average, as the arctic air mass leaves the area and warm air moves in from the south, forecasters said.

The city could also see rain Tuesday before the wet weather finally leaves the area by nightfall.

The 56-degree Tuesday high would still fall well short of the Feb. 16 record high of 71 degrees set in 1954.
