MANHATTAN — Investigators were probing whether ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer assaulted a young companion at the Plaza Hotel Saturday evening, sources said.

Spitzer, who famously resigned state office in 2008 when the FBI revealed that he was a regular customer of high-end prostitutes, met the 25-year-old woman, whom he'd been seeing for two years, at the luxury hotel for drinks, sources said.

While in a hotel room booked in his name, the two started arguing because the woman wanted to return to her native Russia, and Spitzer wanted her to stay, sources said.

At one point, he put his hands on or near the woman's neck to restrain her, she told investigators, according to sources.

She also used a sharp object to superficially cut her wrists, she told investigators.

Someone called 911 and the woman was brought to Roosevelt Hospital where NYPD detectives interviewed her about the alleged assault, sources said.

She told them Spitzer was involved, but that she didn't want to press charges and was released, sources said.

Later, investigators re-interviewed her in an NYPD patrol car, but she again said she didn't want to press charges and abruptly ended the questioning and left, sources said.

She caught a Russia-bound flight from John F. Kennedy Airport about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, sources said.

Police have not arrested Spitzer, but would like to question him about the incident, sources said.

"There is no truth to the allegation," said Lisa Linden, a spokeswoman for Spitzer.
