LOWER MANHATTAN — Local Councilwoman Margaret Chin, along with every member of the City Council, makes more money than the average constituent, data analyzed by DNAinfo New York found.

The City Council voted recently to give themselves a 32 percent raise and Chin, the longtime councilwoman, will make $148,000 with the new pay increase. That's about 1.3 times the median income for her district, which includes Lower Manhattan, Chinatown and parts of the Lower East Side, SoHo and Nolita.

The pay gap between Chin and her constituents isn't nothing — but it's not as large as the pay gap between some other council members and their constituents.

Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, for example, makes about 7.36 times the median income of $22,359 in her district, which includes parts of East Harlem and the South Bronx, with her $164,000 salary.

Out of 51 council districts in the city, 35 have council members that make more than twice his or her constituents.
