MIDTOWN — A fired Saks Fifth Avenue employee tried to leave the retailer’s flagship store with more than $6,600 in stolen gift cards after getting canned, police said.

After getting his pink slip, the former employee gathered his belongings and tried to leave the 611 Fifth Ave. store about 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 26, police said.

He attempted to exit through the store’s customer doors instead of an employee exit, but was detained by store security, who found 75 gift cards valued at $6,695.70 in his bag, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

Later, a police officer found about 150 more gift cards on him, the complaint added. The total value of those cards was not clear.

The officer also found a Wells Fargo debit card that didn’t belong to him, which the newly unemployed staffer said he grabbed from the store along with his belongings when he was asked to leave, police said.

The man told a police officer he stole the gift cards without permission, with the intention of either reselling them or giving them away as gifts, the complaint said.

He was arrested and charged with grand larceny, the DA said.

He was released without bail on Jan. 27 and is expected to appear in New York Criminal Court on April 4, the DA added.

An attorney for the man declined to comment Thursday.

Saks Fifth Avenue did not respond to a request for comment.
