Benz-Driving Gunman Robs St. John's Student Leaving Chase Bank Near Campus

By Katie Honan | February 2, 2016 2:37pm

FRESH MEADOWS — A St. John's University student was robbed at gunpoint after taking money out of a bank near campus, according to police.

The victim, a commuter student, took cash out at the Chase Bank on the corner of Union Turnpike and Utopia Parkway at around 8 p.m. Monday night and started walking home, police said.

While walking on 175th Street near 75th Avenue, a silver Mercedes Benz drove by, and then pulled up next to her, police said.

A man jumped out of the passenger seat, pulled out a silver handgun and told the victim to "stop, shut up and give me your bag," according to the St. John's Public Safety office, which sent out an alert about the attack across campus.

The victim handed over her bag, with an unidentified amount of cash, police said. The gunman got back into the car, which fled west on Union Turnpike.

The suspect is described as in his 30s, approximately 5'5" and was last seen wearing a dark jacket and jeans. It's unclear who was driving the car.

If you have any information about the robbery, contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
