LOWER EAST SIDE - A new luxury boutique hotel stretching from Orchard Street to Allen Street is open for business.

Sago Hotel, located at 120 Allen St., started welcoming guests Jan. 15, according to general manager Michael Melendez.

Its 20 rooms include a two-story, $1,500-per-night penthouse featuring a patio with panoramic views of Manhattan and a wine cooler that can be pre-stocked to a guest's specifications. Other units include stand-alone bathtubs and exposed cinderblock walls.

Smaller rooms will run between $175 and $500 per night, depending on their size and the season, Melendez said.

The hotel's basement is being converted into The John Lamb, a restaurant Melendez said will open within 90 days and serve locally grown foods to hotel guests and the public.

As first reported by Bowery Boogie, Sago was built on the former site of Fine & Klein Handbags, which had operated in the neighborhood for more than 40 years. The property was purchased in 2008 by Shimon Avadi for $4.2 million, according to the site.

Melendez said Community Board 3 must still approve The John Lamb's request to serve guests at night on an outdoor patio owned by the hotel. He said concerns had been raised over patio noise levels, but added that he expects the business' plans to be approved at the next CB3 meeting in February.

The restaurant's liquor license application was removed from the board's January agenda. Susan Stetzer, CB3's district manager, said The John Lamb withdrew its application from consideration at that time. She declined to comment Wednesday on Sago in anticipation of future board actions.
