MIDTOWN EAST — Traffic on the FDR was a little hairy on Tuesday morning but it was for a very special reason — a woman gave birth to a baby boy in the passenger seat of a car.
Detective Michael Sharpe was on his way to traffic court when he overheard the 911 dispatcher reporting a 39-year-old woman having a baby "right now" in a gold Subaru Forester on the FDR Drive, according to police.
While Sharpe searched for the Forester, the 911 dispatch gave instructions on how to deliver the baby to the woman's husband, who had called in on his cellphone, police said.
By the time Sharpe arrived on scene at East 47th Street roughly 8 a.m., the baby was already crowning.
Sharpe immediately assisted with the birth until Det. Robert Mirfield and Det. Joseph Conway of the Emergency Service Unit arrived.
Nicola Wong was born weighing 7 pound 6 ounces, according to NYPD's Special Operations Unit.
An ambulance took the mother and baby to New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell, officials said.
Wong is doing "just fine," according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
The NYPD congratulated all involved on Twitter.
