MIDTOWN SOUTH — A pair of thieves impersonated police officers in a scheme to steal cash from a woman in Midtown last month, according to a police report.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, was sitting in her parked car outside 159 W. 29th St. between Broadway and Sixth avenue at about 6:40 a.m. on Dec. 12 when the two men approached her, displayed a badge and told her they were narcotics officers, officials said.

It was unclear whether the badge was fake or a real one belonging to an officer.

The crooks then told the woman they needed to search her car and, when she complied, one of the suspects swiped an unspecified amount of cash from her wallet as the second impersonator pretended to call in the fake incident on his cellphone, police said.

The suspects fled in an unknown direction, according to a police report.

Police described the thieves as two men about 30 years old, both standing 6-foot-1 with one of the men weighing about 185 pounds and the other weighing about 170 pounds, according to a police spokesman.

Security footage of the men showed one of them wearing a light colored jacket, black pants and white sneakers and carrying a light-colored backpack. His accomplice was wearing a gray sweater, gray sweatpants, a black jacket and black sneakers.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit tips on the website.
