GOVERNORS ISLAND — A soaring canopy of recycled clothes hangers is on its way to Governors Island this summer.

The quirky installation, to be built from hundreds of wire hangers from local dry cleaners, is the winner of the annual City of Dreams Pavilion design competition, organized by arts group FIGMENT.

The structure, called Hanger Barn, was chosen from a panel of jurors from more than 100 other entries, according to FIGMENT.

Design team Folio created the winning proposal, which, according to FIGMENT, will "create the illusion of motion."

The goal of the competition, now in its sixth year, is to give young designers the chance to create whimsical structures from unexpected, eco-friendly materials, the arts organization says on its website. The pavilions are also meant to encourage visitors to the Island and give them a unique way to interact with public art.

One juror, Benjamin Jones, the designer of the FIGMENT Treehouse that's had a home on Governors Island for the past five summers, said he was excited by the Hanger Barn in part because "it takes something entirely non-structural and makes a structure out of it,” according to a statement.

Last year, the competition yielded two winners — one made from broken umbrellas, and another inspired by New York Harbor School's Billion Oyster project, an initiative meant to return oysters to the waters surrounding Governors Island and Lower Manhattan.

FIGMENT, a nonprofit arts organization that hosts public art installations across the country, runs the annual contest in partnership with the Structural Engineers Association of New York and the Emerging New York Architects Committee of the American Institute of Architects NYC Chapter.
