HARLEM — Twelve people were hurt, five seriously, when a fire erupted in a trash compactor and filled an apartment building with smoke Monday night, the FDNY said.

Flames erupted near the ninth floor of 410 St. Nicholas Ave., near West 131st Street, about 10:10 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

Smoke quickly filled the building and about 60 firefighters brought the blaze under control by midnight, the spokesman said.

Five civilians were treated for serious injuries at Harlem Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, officials said.

Seven others, including a firefighter, were treated at the same hospital for minor injuries, officials said.

Fire marshals will determine what sparked the blaze, an FDNY spokesman said.
