FINANCIAL DISTRICT — Media giants News Corp. and 21st Century Fox are no longer moving their headquarters Downtown as anchor tenants inside 2 World Trade Center, the companies said in a joint statement Friday afternoon.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned companies will stay in their longtime Midtown offices at 1211 Avenue of the Americas, deciding to extend their lease through 2025.

"After much careful consideration we have decided to maintain our New York headquarters and other business operations at 1211 and 1185 Avenue of the Americas," the statement read. "We have extension options that could continue our occupancy in our current sites through 2025."

The companies had announced over the summer that they'd signed a tentative lease deal to move their operations into 2 World Trade Center, announcing a new "stacked" design for the long-stalled tower, with a new architect, Bjarke Ingels.

“While I am disappointed that 21st Century Fox and News Corp have elected to hold off on moving their headquarters, I am immensely grateful to the Murdochs and their talented team, as well as to the Bjarke Ingels Group and our partners at the Port Authority, for their inspired work over the past year," 2 World Trade owner Larry Silverstein said in a statement. “Make no mistake: it won’t be long before we find a great company to anchor 2 World Trade Center."

It remains unclear whether the soaring 81-story skyscraper design revealed over the summer would be used by a future tenant.

The companies did not immediately return a request for comment.
