MOTT HAVEN — The police officer injured in a shootout on Saturday was hit by friendly fire, according to the NYPD.

Officer Sherrod Stuart, 25, was in the midst of breaking up a massive fight at 2505 3rd Ave. in the South Bronx on Saturday around 2 a.m. when he got into a shootout with 19-year-old Christopher Rice, police said.

Stuart was shot in the right foot, and although police initially said that Rice had hit him, they now believe he was injured by friendly fire.

It was unclear whether or not Rice would still face charges of assaulting an officer.
