QUEENS — The 67th Avenue subway station in Forest Hills and the Parsons Boulevard stop in Jamaica will be among 30 dilapidated stations citywide slated to "be completely renewed," Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday.
The makeover will require the closure of the 67th Avenue station (on the M and R lines) and the Parsons Boulevard stop (on the F line), each for six months to a year, according to Cuomo.
“These cleaner, brighter stations will be easier to navigate, with better and more intuitive wayfinding, as well as a modernized look and feel,” the governor’s office said in a statement regarding a variety of MTA improvement projects expected to be finished by 2020.
It is unclear when the 67th Avenue and the Parsons Boulevard stations will close for the project.
The MTA said Monday that it's too early for a station-specific timetable.
Work on the majority of the 30 stations slated for renovation will be completed by 2018, and all of them will be finished by 2020, according to Cuomo.
Some local elected officials applauded Cuomo’s plan.
“Queens doesn’t have the mass transit options that Manhattan has, so what we do have needs to work really well,” said Councilman Rory Lancman, who represents Jamaica, Briarwood and Kew Gardens Hills, in a statement.
“This train stop in particular is a linchpin of transit in my district, connecting people in Jamaica, Jamaica Hills and all along the Parsons Boulevard corridor to jobs in Manhattan,” he said about the Parsons Boulevard station, adding that the renovations will “bring the station into the twenty-first century.”
Four Astoria subway stations will also close for several months as part of the plan.
