EAST HARLEM — The Salvation Army is having a growth spurt.

The nonprofit plans to demolish its building on 125th Street and Third Avenue and replace it with an 11-story mixed-use structure that will have 233 apartment units, according to permits filed with the Department of Buildings.

According to NIMBY — which first reported the filing — the building will have a basketball court and laundry room in the basement, a house of worship and cafeteria on the first floor, offices and a classroom on the second flood, and fitness rooms, a cafe, library and offices on the third floor.

There will also be housing for seniors, according to permits.

Peter Poon Architects, which has designed several hotels, apartment buildings and churches throughout the city and New Jersey, is working with Salvation Army on the building, records show.

The representative of the religious organization in charge of the project declined to speak about the building on Tuesday, saying he won’t be available until next week.

The building is one block west of the planned multi-million E125 development, which will have more than 1,000 units, a proton beam therapy center and more than 70,000 square feet of development space.
