NEW YORK CITY — Good news, New York: You can put away your parka — at least over the weekend.

The first week of January smacked New Yorkers in the face with below-freezing temperatures and biting winds, but temperatures are expected to rise this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

On Friday, meteorologists predict sunny skies with a high of 42 degrees and a low of 36 degrees.

Saturday is slated to be mild throughout the day, even if a bit damp. "On Saturday we have a high of 47 degrees, which is a few degrees above normal," National Weather Service meteorologist Carlie Buccola said. The low will be 44 degrees, and there's a "slight chance of rain," she said.

A high of 54 degrees, a low of 35 degrees and a 60 percent chance of rain is expected on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

"The average high for this weekend is 38 degrees, so it is definitely above normal," Buccola said.
