STATEN ISLAND — A candidate in the 2013 City Council race for Staten Island's Mid-Island seat was fined by the Campaign Finance Board for taking contributions from political action committees not registered with the city.

Mendy Mirocznik, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic seat in the 2013 race, was fined $2,178 by the finance board for getting $520 from the unregistered Life Party PAC and other issues with his funds, the Staten Island Advance reported.

In 2013, Mirocznik tried to win the Democratic primary against John Mancuso to vie for the Mid-Island seat left vacant by James Oddo, who was term-limited out of office.

Mirocznik eventually lost the primary to Mancuso, who later lost the election against the current councilman in the district, Steven Matteo.

During the campaign, Mirocznik filed a $1,752.48 contract with the New York State Democratic Committee for access to voter software, but the transaction did not appear on bank statements, according to the CFB.

Because it didn't appear on the statements, the CFB counted it as a contribution from an unregistered committee.

Mirocznik's campaign also failed to report expenses for office supplies but said it printed fliers with supplies donated by the Democratic Committee of Richmond County, another group unregistered with the CFB.
